Statement

How might we promote digital healthcare for elderly citizens in the context of a pandemic?

Secondary Research

We started our research by delving into three large sub-categories:

1. The lives of elderly people
We connected with users on a 1:1 basis and learned about their varied behaviors, roles and requirements for the Reports.

2. Their relationship with technology
How do they interact with technology now? This allowed us to establish a rough baseline for what kind of technology would be right to introduce. We want to be innovative and novel without alienating users.

3. Their experience with healthcare during the pandemic
What is the current state of their healthcare? How, if at all, has the pandemic changed that? How has this happened across societal lines?

User
Interviews

Based on our secondary research findings, we proceeded to conduct interviews with elderly people from the age of 65+ in order to gain more specific insights into the experience of healthcare during the pandemic.

Interview
Insights

Management
“It’s hard to maintain so many medical reports”“I keep an alarm or someone reminds me to take medicine”.

Adaptation to Technology
“Don’t know how to use new Smartphones or Smart watches.”“Mostly uses fitness band just to watch oxygen and BP and heart rate”“Usually do all the health process manually”“Not able to operate apps due to old age / lack of digital knowledge”.

Mental Health Effects
“I was afraid to even visit a doctor due to COVID so I was very stressed”“Find time consuming and stress buster using apps”“For mental health they I to group on WhatsApp video call or watching YouTube”.

Isolation
“Missing interaction with friends/long time group members due to pandemic”.

Health Risks
“Health problems like irregular digestion due to sitting at home”.

Personas

Prioritise Painpoints

We prioritise the pain points in term of importance and feasibility standards which our team was going to solve.

Painpoints

Age Factor
Because of age related issues, memory loss, etc. they might require assistance.

Pandemic
Totally unsafe for senior citizens to go outside for health checkups or to buy medicines.

Digital Technology
Unable to use more advanced technology because of complex interfaces or lack of knowledge etc.

Isolation
Mental health effects due to isolation during lockdown.

Management
Hectic task for senior citizens to keep so many test reports and doctor’s slips.

Empathy Driven Solutions

How might we harness the best of technology to create a comfortable experience that our users can interact
with with ease?

Cloud Storage
We can offer a cloud storage solution to their document management needs. Access can be granted as per the needs of each user.

Social Support
We aim to address the effects of isolation through a social component to the app. Inspired by platforms like Clubhouse, we created a platform that allows for community support.

Voice AI
We can use a voice assistant to create a more natural, less cumbersome experience for our elderly users. Through our research we found that small typeface, keyboards and buttons were sometimes not intuitive, with this we can help them use our platform seamlessly.

Information Architecture

Wireframes

We started with wire framing and brainstorming what the app may look like.

Screens

  • Onboarding

In order to build trust and comfortability with our users, we built out a comprehensive onboarding process that eases them into the platform.
  • Homepage

The home page is the centre of the platform. We wanted to make sure that the most frequented features are championed, and the visual language is kept clear and bold.
Healthclub

Through our research, we found that a large portion of the elderly population was struggling with mental health issues. We wanted our platform to address some of these issues in a community-oriented way. HealthClub is a feature that connects users to each other based on different topics and mental health concerns. Each ‘room’ is open to everyone, and is moderated by a mental health professional. We aim to build a network of solidarity and support through this social element of our platform.
  • Voice based Consultation

We wanted users to be able to consult doctors through our app, eliminating the need to go into hospitals and clinics for appointments. This is where our users are able to do that, and can even use the Voice based AI feature for assistance.
  • Smart Reports

Record management was a hurdle for the people we interviewed. We wanted to create a central space where users can view and manage their reports
and records and share them with healthcare professionals and caregivers. Our users can check reports with the help of Voice Assistant eliminating the need to navigate through touch based menus.

Future Scope

Virtual Reality
We believe that Healer could evolve with future technologies to create more valuable and impactful experiences. Virtual Reality can help provide more immersive environments for community engagement and connection. There have been many studies showing that the elderly miss out on real-world interaction, and in the context of another lockdown, this would be a valuable asset.
